چکیده

A systematic consistency analysis and optimization procedure is applied to models of representative ozone, OH, and HO2 observations in the mesosphere and upper stratosphere. The approach considers both measurement and rate parameter uncertainties. The results show some data point inconsistencies and the inability of the accepted photochemical mechanism to predict observations without unfavored large alterations of many rate constants from their consensus values. Optimization results do favor larger rate constants for OH + O, and photolytic ozone and

Stratospheric and mesospheric HO2 observations from the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder

This study introduces stratospheric and mesospheric hydroperoxyl radical (HO2) estimates from the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) using an offline retrieval (i.e. run separately from the standard MLS algorithm). This new data set provides two daily zonal averages, one during daytime from 10 to 0.0032 hPa (using day-minus-night differences between 10 and 1 hPa to ameliorate systematic biases) ...

Mesospheric dynamical changes induced by the solar proton events in October–November 2003

[1] The Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Electrodynamic General Circulation Model (TIME-GCM) was used to study the atmospheric dynamical influence of the solar protons that occurred in Oct–Nov 2003, the fourth largest period of solar proton events (SPEs) measured in the past 40 years. The highly energetic solar protons produced odd hydrogen (HOx) and odd nitrogen (NOy). Significant short-live...

Inferring the global cosmic dust influx to the Earths atmosphere from lidar observations of the vertical flux of mesospheric Na

Estimates of the global influx of cosmic dust are highly uncertain, ranging from 0.4–110 t/d. All meteoric debris that enters the Earth’s atmosphere is eventually transported to the surface. The downward fluxes of meteoric metals like mesospheric Na and Fe, in the region below where they are vaporized and where the majority of these species are still in atomic form, are equal to their meteoric ...

Measuring the Absolute Height and Profile of the Mesospheric Sodium Layer using a Continuous Wave Laser

We have developed and tested a novel method, based on LIDAR, of measuring the height and profile of the mesospheric sodium layer using a continuous wave laser. It is more efficient than classical LIDAR as the laser is on for 50% of the time, and so can in principle be used during laser guide star adaptive optics observations. It also has significant advantages over direct imaging techniques bec...

Middle Atmospheric Changes Caused by the January and March 2012 Solar Proton Events

The recent 23–30 January and 7–11 March 2012 solar proton event (SPE) periods were substantial and caused significant impacts on the middle atmosphere. These were the two largest SPE periods of solar cycle 24 so far. The highly energetic solar protons produced considerable ionization of the neutral atmosphere as well as HOx (H, OH, HO2) and NOx (N, NO, NO2). We compute a NOx production of 1.9 a...
